St. Laurence opened its’ doors on September 18, 1929, with an enrollment of 140 students. The Sisters of Mercy of Aurora accepted the responsibility for the instruction of students.
On March 10, 1960, a wing was added to the school that housed 4 classrooms, a gym, a library, an office, a scout room and a multipurpose room.
For 22 years, world renowned Jazz Artist, Nick Colionne, has musically mentored students. This also includes him playing the guitar for the annual student performance of the “Passion of Christ”, during Holy Week.

The Gail Borden Summer Reading trophy has been awarded to St. Laurence 17 times.
St. Laurence is the one and only school in Elgin to have a student Interact Club with a Rotary Club member as a sponsor/moderator.
